Hello, and welcome to a new segment that will be coming to the blog. It is called Real Review! It is something that will be (I hope) regularly featured here in the new year. I guess before we begin, I should explain what this is. It is where I will be reviewing real-life things. These real-life things include movies, products, and shows. The review characteristics, as I like to call them, will depend on what I am reviewing. After all, you wouldn't review nail polish the same way you do House of Dragons.
I will take suggestions of things to review. They can be made either in the comment section of the previous entry, in Discord, or through our other social media pages. If it is a tv series that you would like me to watch, I can do a long post based on the series. I can talk about each season individually, but that is a post that would take me a while to finish. So I will let you guys pick a specific episode from that season and talk about just that episode while I continue to watch and talk about the series.
I feel like I didn't explain that well. I guess something like this; its better to show you than tell you. Here goes nothing!
Today I will review the second film of my favorite movie series, Avatar. Avatar 2: The Way of Water. To say I was excited about this movie would be a bit of an understatement. I loved the first Avatar and was excited for the second one to come out. No matter how much I loved the first one, I will not be swayed to like the second one. This entry is my honest opinion of the movie. The five characteristics I will be looking at to say whether this is a five-star or one-star review are...
♕ Price
♕ Entertainment Value
♕ Time Value
♕ Easy to Understand?
♕ Depth of Character
Depending on whether the movie meets every characteristic or not; will depend on whether it is a five-star worthy movie or not. I should mention that each item can get a no-star, half-a-star, or full-star. If it doesn't get a star in any shape or form, it is not deemed worthy in that area for me. If it gets half a point, it reaches the criteria halfway but doesn't reach it to its fullest. The full star would mean; that it did everything it was supposed to.
I will talk about each characteristic individually and then add them up at the end. I will then give you the final verdict. Sounds easy right? Before I begin, I should mention that there are spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk!
♕ PRICE
Now. I should mention that I saw this movie on a date. So I didn't pay for the ticket myself. However, I got permission from my boyfriend to do this review, and I have the ticket stub and receipt. I understand that prices are different depending on where you go, where you are from, and what currency you use. For this, we are talking about a small town in Pennsylvania with a brand-named movie theater. The price for the ticket alone is ... $10.50. No wonder people stopped going to the movies with prices like that. Streaming services are at least $15.00 a month if you want to get them for their value. However, that is $15 a month versus $10.50 each for an adult for one night. How do they expect to continue to fight against these streaming services when they want prices like that? When thinking about it, I have to consider how long it would take for this movie to get onto a streaming service ... The thing about Avatar is Disney owns the rights to the movie. They already have Avatar on the service, and with how they have been rotating movies Avatar 2 would take a while, yes, but not an obscene amount of time. So it still doesn't work for me. The price for a ticket does not get a star from me. I think it would be better for them to go down in price.
♕ ENTERTAINMENT VALUE
Thinking back on the movie, there were definitely eye-catching moments. It was definitely action-packed, which kept the audience engaged. I believe this dampened the movie for me a bit. It had more action scenes than storytelling scenes. When the action scenes ended, I didn't feel drawn into the movie again until there was another scene with action in it... The story was what people were excited about, exploring the new area of Pandora was what people were waiting for, not just the action. It's hard to have a movie of just action sequences without a bit of storytelling behind it. What story they do tell has been outplayed. For example, they have a scene in the movie where Lo'ak gets chased by a giant sea creature. He ends up getting saved by a bigger sea creature in the end. He befriends it and yadda yadda. You know how that type of story goes. Now that I think about it, the only scene that comes to mind is this one from the Little Mermaid ...
If you have seen the movie, The Little Mermaid, you would know that Ariel and Flounder don't get saved by a bigger monster. That doesn't fit this. The chase does. If you know, you know. I will be giving this a half-star. Yes, it does have entertainment value, but it doesn't do enough.
♕ Time Value
Was the movie worth my time watching? I would have to say yes. For the simple fact that it is part of a series I enjoy. I plan on watching every movie, including the ones that may not be the best. I hate that they made us wait to watch the show. The first one came out in 2009; the year is now 2023. That means we waited 13 years, going on 14 years for this movie. Considering they had 13 years to create it, you would think it'd be better. I don't think I wasted time watching it. I feel like I wasted time waiting and being excited about it. This one leaves me a bit stumped. I am giving it a half-star.
♕ Easy to Understand?
This one is easy because the answer is simple. It's a yes. The movie was easy to understand. So a full star can be given.
♕ Depth of Character
All right, this one is going to be interesting because to rate this. I have to sit back and remember the characters ... fun. When I think back to the film, I feel bad for the characters in the first movie. Neytiri and Jake did not get enough productive time on screen. They were used for fighting and dramatic scenes only. Other than that, they barely played a role. Their kids were okay. There wasn't much depth of character because there wasn't much story being told. There were some instances where you could see character development. How Aonug (son to the chief of a Water Tribe) started out as an enemy to Neteyem and Lo'ak (two of Jake and Neytiri's kids) but later became friends with them and even helped them. The best example of the depth of character or character development would be with Spider (Colonel Quaritchs son). He started off the movie looking for approval from Jake and Neytiri. He just wanted to be a part of the tribe, part of their family. Of course, he is human or one of the sky people; that makes it difficult, especially for someone like Neytiri to ever welcome him into her family. She lost so much from the sky people even though her husband is or was one of them. He managed to find a family member in Colonel Quaritch or at least a copy of him in avatar form. Initially, he hated him and only saw him as an enemy. However, as the movie continues, you can see that he grows closer to him, even saving him in the end. If this scene had happened at the beginning, he would have let the Colonel die. My rating for this one is a half-star. I feel like they could have done more. Especially for a movie that was as long as this one was.
Now for the final result. After tallying up everything the final result I give this movie is...
Two and a half stars ... yikes! Obviously, for this movie, I do not see it being that good. It is not one I would personally recommend for you to go out to the theater and see. Please keep in mind that this, however, is just my opinion. Everything I said here was my opinion and should be taken with that in mind. It is up to you personally to go out and see the movie if you choose. For me, I would wait for it to come out on DVD or on a streaming service. It is technically cheaper and a better use of your time. Unless you go for the movie and the snacks. Then I mean, I can't deny that you have a good reason for it then.
Thank you for reading. I would love for you to comment below on whether you agree or disagree with my rating and explain why. This is an open debate that I would love to have with all of you. I added a poll to the end of the blog here, and see what you guys have to say. Please take the time to answer the poll and give me your reason for your answer below. It is always appreciated.
